Katie Munro is an artist and illustrator based in Bournemouth, specialising in ink, watercolour, and cyanotype to explore both internal and external landscapes. With a keen interest in how personal experiences shape resilience and conceal vulnerability, Katie’s art examines the intricate balance between strength and fragility. Through fluid, expressive compositions, she invites viewers to reflect on the hidden layers of identity, emotion, and self-discovery.

Memories of Mexico captures the thrill of travel – the immersion in new cultures, the sensory overload of sights, sounds, and flavours, and the exhilarating blend of adventure and uncertainty that makes one feel truly alive.

Inspired by Katie’s solo journey through Mexico in 2019, this piece reflects the transformative experience of navigating the world alone. During her guided tour from Mexico City to Playa del Carmen, the journey was punctuated by long coach rides through breathtaking landscapes, vibrant murals, lush flora and fauna, and ancient temples. These impressions converge in this silhouette self-portrait, gazing upon an imagined scene composed of colourful, collaged papers. The fragmented textures symbolise the way memory distorts and romanticises the past, blending reality with nostalgia.

The mountainous backdrop carries a deeper resonance, echoing the artist’s birthplace in the Scottish Highlands – a place rich with childhood memories and, more recently, the landscape of her wedding, marking the transition from solitude to partnership. Memories of Mexico explores the idea of feeling at home within oneself and the world, embracing both the call to adventure and the comfort of belonging.
